Postcard number 17 Cottage Grove Main Street circa 1906

No. 17 - Cottage Grove, Oregon. Circa 1906. Main Street looking West - An early view from what is now 7th and Main. On the left there is a Millinery Shop, The Bazaar, Benson’s Pharmacy in the Bank Building and Lurch’s Store. On the right, a drug store, Telegraph Office, laundry, Bartels Meats, Knickerbocker Building, Hotel Oregon and in the distance Griffin Hardware.

Millinery Shops were quite popular in the early days of Cottage Grove, at one time there were three downtown. Millinery isn’t a word that we hear much these days, do you know what it means?

Postcard 16 Cottage Grove Main Street circa 1917

No. 16 - Cottage Grove, Oregon. Circa 1917. Main Street, at the corner of what is now 6th Street and Main, looking East. Knickerbocker Building, The Fair, Bartels Meat Market, Woodward Building [McCoy’s Pharmacy], Bohemia Saloon [Bookmine], tall wooden building at one time was the Imperial Hotel, Billiard Hall, and a Livery Stable on the left. Notice the passenger train across Main Street. On the right you can see Rosewood Meal sign and Benson Drugs.

This view of Main Street shows the time period when cars were starting to be seen alongside the horse and wagon. There is a lot happening in this photo, you can see the Transfer Company wagon making a delivery to Bartel’s Meat Market and ladies crossing the street carrying their packages. Do you know what type of goods The Fair sold in the building that until a few years ago was Britz Jewelers?

Cottage Grove Main Street Circa 1910

No. 15 - Cottage Grove, Oregon. Circa 1910. Main Street looking West from the area near the train station - This view is before Highway 99 and the Hotel Building were constructed. On the left is Spray’s Flour-Feed-Lime-Cement-Storage building and a Paint and Wallpaper Store sign on the next building.

This is a great shot down Main Street, it sure looks different compared to today. Do you know the route travelers would take in the years right before Highway 99 was completed?
