The Burkholder Woods General Merchandise store circa 1912

No. 37 – Cottage Grove, Oregon. Circa 1912 – View from the corner of Main and 7th Streets looking southwest down Main. The Burkholder Woods General Merchandise store, built around 1909. The building was designed by John Hunzicker a prominent Eugene Architect. This building was renovated about 15 years ago with many of the original features uncovered and restored. It is currently occupied by the Axe & Fiddle and Kalapuya Books. On down the block are The Phillips Building and The Bank Building, recently renovated. Across 6th Street you can see the First National Bank of Cottage Grove completed in late 1911.

In this photo you can see an advertisement painted on the side of the Burkholder Woods store. What is the advertisement that is currently on the building? Does anyone recall how long the current advertisement has been there?

If you look closely at this photo, you can see a clock on the sidewalk near the left end of the Woodard Building. What type of business would have this feature in front of their store?

The Powell & Co. sold men’s shoes and clothing, then the Lawson Building, signs for C.E. Frost an Osteopathic, Grable’s Harness Shop, the First National Bank of Oregon. This is a great photo with the girls posing for the camera. The Hemenway building looks very different today. In the 1970s there was a devastating fire and the second story was removed during the restoration. What business is in this building now?

This photo shows the hustle and bustle during the arrival of a train at the station. Hotel Oregon sent their porters down to collect the baggage of their guests, where was the Hotel Oregon located on Main Street?

No. 33 – Cottage Grove, Oregon. Circa 1912 – A far west viewpoint from Mt. David looking southeast. The large building in the foreground is the Westside School built in 1904, it was torn down to make way for the old Cottage Grove Hospital which opened in 1951. If you look closely, you can see a home with a turret two houses south of the school, The Shinn House still stands on the corner of M and Ash Avenue and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are several other prominent features in this photo. If you look closely, you can see the Fire Department’s hose tower that was located on what is now South River Road. Then on the extreme left you can see a church steeple, which church is this?
